n each of the past eight years, the Bay Area Tumor Institute has received an award of excellence from the National Cancer Institute for achieving very high levels of patient accrual to high-priority NCI-funded clinical research trials. In 2012-13, the Tumor Institute exceeded all other community-based research participants nationwide in providing the most advanced anti-cancer therapies to patients, often years before these treatments become commercially available. Children and adults with cancer receive these treatments free of cost when they join the Institute’s clinical research program. Very substantial improvements in the cure rates for breast cancer and childhood cancer have resulted from this work.
